How Much Infill?
…..
Why Use INFILL?
INFILL for artificial grass surfaces does several IMPORTANT JOBS and is a CRITICAL ELEMENT in the artificial grass surface solution.
.
.
……………………………………………………………
INFILL Adds Value to EVERY System
INFILL will
- HOLD BLADES UPRIGHT
- WEIGH SURFACES DOWN
- PROTECT BLADES AND BACKING FROM UV
- HELP REDUCE MATTING, WEAR & TEAR
INFILL Will help to make your surfaces last LONGER!
Up to 25% Longer!
…………………………….
INFILL MATERIAL is essential!
Using the APPROPRIATE AMOUNT
and TYPE OF INFILL CAN HELP!
You will find …
Most US Manufacturers’ recommend at least 1 to 1.5 pounds of infill, for any style.
Using infill will insure …
- Cooler surface temperatures when blades are standing tall – keeps surfaces from matting
- Weighs the entire surface down – keeps surfaces from moving, wrinkling, buckling, over time
- Reduces surfaces shrink by adding ballast, evenly across the surfaces, holding them in place
- Makes seams stronger – by weighing them down, hiding them from UV and traffic

How Much Infill Do You Use for Artificial Grass?
Use these simple steps to determine how much infill materials to use.
.
.
…………
Let’s Figure Out How Much Infill To Use
Step 1:
Infill selection starts with the surface USE:
- Putting Green Surfaces
- Does water drain over or through the surfaces?
- Is this a bent blade surface style?
- Bocce Ball Surfaces
- Does water drain over or through the surfaces?
- Is this a bent blade surface style?
- Lawn Grasses – how often will the area be used and for what?
- High traffic
- Low Traffic
- Slopes
- Decks (wood or elevated)
- Play areas for
- Daycare
- Playground
- Fall-Zone Safe [ASTM Standards]
Step 2:
Artificial grass surface styles vary – infill amounts will vary due to the SPACE that needs to be filled!
- the SPACING between rows (tufting gauge)
- the HEIGHT of the yarn and
- the DENSITY of stitches, along with
- the STYLE of the yarn
all play a role in HOW MUCH infill to use.
Spacing of blade rows, height, stitch count and type of yarn style ALL contribute to FACE WEIGHT.
IMPORTANT!
FACE WEIGHT alone, does not tell you how much infill to use – again -
USE & all the above need to be considered!
NOTE: FACE WEIGHT vs TOTAL WEIGHT of Artificial Grass Turf surfaces;
FACE WEIGHT = total weight of ONLY THE YARN materials
TOTAL WEIGHT = weight of ALL the surface materials (yarns, backings)

INFILL FOR ARTIFICIAL GRASS
Industry Recommended Guideline*:
…………………………………………………………………..
….
Artificial Grass for Lawns & Landscape
Generally – between 1.25 and 2 inches in height
ARTIFICIAL GRASS INFILL GUIDELINES
High Traffic – fill to 60-70% of blade height for landscape, lawns
Medium Traffic – 40-50% of blade height for lawns
Low Traffic – 20% of blade height infilled – more in higher UV areas
…………………………………………………………………
.
Putting Greens and Bocce Court Surface Styles
1/2 inch to 1.25 inch
.
.
.
.
Bent Blade styles require 90-95% of total blade height
NON-directional styles may require ZERO to 80-90% of height filled
……………………………….
.
Playground & Daycare
1.5 to 2+ inches
High Traffic
May require FALL-ZONE Safety Specifications
[see ASTM for more information on Playground Standards for HIC and GMAX]
…………………………………………….
How WIDE is the space
between rows of blades?
Most Landscape Grass Styles
may have a 3/8th inch tuft gauge
[ see example to the left ]
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Many Playground & Sports Styles
May have from 1/2 to 3/4 inch tuft gauge.
[ see example of 1/2 inch tuft gauge at right]
.
.
The WIDER the tuft gauge, the more infill required to fill the area between rows
